Rolling Stone is a Peter Ibold designed Endurance 35, with hull and superstructure designs both slightly modified and approved by Mr Ibold, resulting in a superb, sea-kindly and comfortable cruising sailing boat of striking, sporty yet classic appearance. One of a kind, a ’35 with full standing headroom, great comfort for a liveaboard couple plus one or two crew as required.
The hull was built in 1974 at Windboats yard, one of the world leaders in Ferrocement construction at the time. At 50 years old, the ferro of the hull is at it’s strongest, and we have recently (2021) dried him out in hot weather, treated and and re-sealed the hull, before converting to a modern type of antifouling.
Bought by aviator and seaman extraordinaire Tony, she was fitted out over the following 6 years and finally launched in 1980. We have the original constructional drawings and even the frame templates. We bought her from Tony in 2016, after he had been standing in a boatyard in Plymouth for about three years. We recognised his male gender
Since then we have mostly lived aboard, doing boatwork alternating with bouts of sailing. He has not been ‘restored’ in the sense of taken back to original or classic condition. More accurately he has been developed from a sound and superbly conceived old boat into a modern sailing and liveaboard cruiser. The aim has been Atlantic crossing, but circumstances having changed, and with the delays of Covid, advancing age makes my desire a less hectic goal. A bilge-keel motor-sailer seems more appropriate, and I would contemplate a swop with anyone wanting to move from coastal to bluewater.
Everything has been done with the long game in view, designed for ease of use and maintenance as well as seaworthiness and of course a cool look. Many old features have been deliberately retained, sometimes given a quirky spin by the juxtaposition of modern materials.
Accommodations
Forepeak
A large anchor locker, approx 1.8m long, providing a storage for ground tackle and associated gear. The workings for the windlass as well as the washdown pump are situated here
Forecabin:
Double berth of generous size with full sit-up headroom, and voluminous storage under;
large clothes locker; chair and side table; incidental storage;
Midships, Port:
Large full-height locker internally lit, for storage and housing small but effective watermaker. Abaft of this a full-length (2m) fixed berth (water tank below) with a second berth folded away at headlining level. Outboard of the berth, attractive Iroko lockers provide storage.
Midships, Starboard: Fwd end is the heads compartment, with toilet, basin and mixer shower. Fresh water and blackwater storage tanks, mechanised black pump-out and plenty of storage. Abaft of the heads is the U shaped galley, twin sinks, great permanent work area, vast amount of storage and twin-burner cooker/oven.
Saloon:
The saloon is located within the classic Endurance doghouse up 2 steps from midships. To starboard, nestled behind the sofa/berth is an array of lockers from deck down to sole level. A table is located on the forward bulkhead. This can fold flat, or extend double to seat 4. The Beta 38 engine is located at the forward end of the saloon, below the sole which is entirely removable giving incredibly good access to the engine, drive train and associated filters, batteries etc. Diesel tanks lie adjacent the engine on both sides.
Portside of the saloon is a large (1.2m) modern control station and work-from-home area. Computers, inverter, screens, sound system, electric supply, navigation, administration are all centred here. Indeed, at present a digital piano is built in on a slide-out from beneath the table. Below the table are stored many boat parts and spares. The stool serving the chart table may be easily freed from its mounting for dining or for ease of access to the storage area. The LIFEPO batteries are behind the central console.
Abaft the chart table are storage lockers including a wet-locker adjacent to the companionway.
Stern:
Below the cockpit you will find steering gear, chargers, diesel heater, engine air extraction, and other ancillary gear. Access is via a crawl-hatch below the companionway steps. Storage here for fenders.
